Quick Explainer
What is 5D diamond painting?

If you've seen "5D" on a kit and wondered what it actually means, here's the straight answer, no jargon required.

Straight answer

5D refers to how the resin diamonds are cut and how they catch light

The "D" in 5D doesn't stand for a dimension the way it might in film or gaming. It refers to the number of facets cut into each resin diamond, which affects how much light the diamond reflects and how much sparkle and dimension the finished piece has.

A 5D diamond has more facets than older 3D-style diamonds, giving it a sharper, more multi-directional sparkle. Most current diamond painting kits, including every kit we sell, use 5D diamonds as the standard.

3D Diamond

4 facets, softer, more subtle shine

5D Diamond

More facets, sharper multi-directional sparkle

5D vs full drill: not the same thing

These two terms get mixed up constantly, and they describe different things entirely.

5D

  • Describes the diamond itself, its facet cut and how much it sparkles
  • Has nothing to do with how much of the canvas is covered

Full drill

  • Describes canvas coverage, meaning the entire design is covered in diamonds
  • The opposite is partial drill, where only part of the design uses diamonds
Why it's worth knowing

Does 5D actually make a difference?

Yes, and here's what it actually changes about your finished piece.

More sparkle

More facets mean more surfaces catching light, so the finished piece genuinely shimmers more than older diamond styles.

Real dimension

The extra facets give each diamond visible depth, so the canvas reads as textured rather than flat, even from a distance.

The current standard

5D is what most modern kits use by default, including every kit in our collection, so you're not choosing a lesser option by going with it.

Quick questions

What is 5D diamond art?

5D diamond art is the same thing as 5D diamond painting, just a different name some sellers use for the same craft and the same style of resin diamond.

Is 5D better than 3D diamond painting?

Generally yes. 5D diamonds have more facets than 3D, giving a sharper, more noticeable sparkle. Most current kits have moved to 5D as the standard.

Are all our kits 5D?

Yes. Every kit we sell uses 5D full drill diamonds as standard, so you don't need to check or choose this specifically when shopping.

Do I need special tools for 5D diamonds?

No. A standard diamond painting pen and wax work the same way for 5D diamonds as any other style. No special pen heads or extra accessories are required.
